What is a PIN code?
PIN stands for Postal Index Number. India Post introduced it in August 1972 to make sorting machine-readable and routing systematic — before that, mail was sorted by postal address text alone, which was slow and error-prone.
The 6 digits break down like this:
The first digitidentifies one of 9 postal regions: 1 covers Delhi, Punjab, Himachal, J&K, Haryana, Chandigarh; 2 covers UP and Uttarakhand; 3 covers Rajasthan and Gujarat; 4 covers Maharashtra, MP, Chhattisgarh, Goa; 5 covers Andhra, Telangana, Karnataka; 6 covers Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry; 7 covers West Bengal, Odisha, North-East; 8 covers Bihar, Jharkhand; and 9 is reserved for Army Postal Service.
The second digit narrows to a sub-region within that region. The third digit identifies a sorting district. The last three digits name the specific delivery post office. So 110001 = Region 1 (North), sub-region 1 (Delhi), district 0 (Central), office 001 (New Delhi GPO at Connaught Place).
Each PIN typically covers multiple post offices — one Head Office (HO) or Sub-Office (SO) plus several Branch Offices (BOs) that deliver to surrounding villages or neighbourhoods. Office types are visible above as colored badges.
How to find a PIN code
- 1Look at the address itself. Every Indian address ends with the 6-digit PIN. If you can read the address, you have the PIN.
- 2Ask the recipient. Most people know their own PIN better than any directory does — especially for newly-built localities or PINs that have changed.
- 3Search by state and district above. Switch to "State + district → office" mode. Pick your state, then district, type a locality keyword. We'll list every matching post office with its PIN.
- 4Verify with a forward lookup. Once you have a candidate PIN, paste it in the "PIN → Offices" tab to confirm the city, district, and state are what you expected.

What does each digit of a PIN code mean?▼

What's the difference between a PIN and a ZIP code?▼
Functionally similar — both route mail to a delivery area. Format differs: India PIN is 6 digits with no letters; US ZIP is 5 digits (or 9 with the +4 extension); UK postcodes mix letters and digits. PIN is also called "PIN code" colloquially even though that's redundant ("Postal Index Number code").
Can multiple post offices share the same PIN?▼
Yes — and most PINs do. A typical urban PIN covers 5-25 post offices (one Head Office or Sub-Office, plus several Branch Offices for surrounding villages or neighbourhoods). 110001 (Connaught Place, Delhi) covers 21 offices; 500001 (Hyderabad GPO) covers 5; 700001 (Kolkata GPO) covers 14.
What do BO, SO, and HO mean?▼
BO = Branch Office (smallest, usually village-level, limited services). SO = Sub-Office (handles a larger area, more services including money orders and parcels). HO = Head Office (regional headquarters, all services including international post). Each is a logical hierarchy: HOs supervise SOs, SOs supervise BOs.
Where do I find a PIN code for an address?▼
Three places: (1) the recipient's address itself (always include the PIN — it's mandatory for India Post delivery); (2) search by area/district above; (3) ask the recipient — they'll know their PIN better than any database. For unfamiliar addresses, the search-by-state-and-district above is reliable.
Why does my Hyderabad PIN show as Andhra Pradesh in some lookups?▼
Telangana split off from Andhra Pradesh on 2 June 2014. Most legacy postal datasets (including the one we built on) were exported before the split or shortly after, when the Telangana state field hadn't propagated. We've patched the 10 historic Telangana districts (Adilabad, Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Khammam, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Rangareddy, Warangal) plus Ladakh's split from J&K (2019) on this page. Other tools may still show stale states.
Is the data fresh?▼
The dataset covers ~155,000 post offices across ~19,000 unique PINs and is sourced from a public India Post export. PIN-to-area mappings are stable — pincodes don't get renumbered. New PINs added in the last few years (especially in newly-formed districts) may be missing; for those, India Post's official site at indiapost.gov.in is authoritative.
