For most goods and services GST is 18%. Use the slab chips above or check the official rate via your HSN code.

How GST is calculated

Forward (adding GST):

GST   = Base × Rate% Total = Base + GST

Reverse (extracting GST from a GST-inclusive price):

Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate/100) GST  = Total − Base

For intra-state transactions, GST splits 50:50 between CGST (Central) and SGST (State). For inter-state transactions, the full GST is collected as IGST and shared between the Centre and the destination state. The total tax amount is the same either way.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between forward and reverse GST?

Forward GST starts from the base price and adds GST on top: GST = Base × Rate%, Total = Base + GST. Use this when you have a wholesale/factory price and want to know the consumer-facing price. Reverse GST starts from a GST-inclusive price and extracts the GST: Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate/100), GST = Total − Base. Use this when you have an MRP / retail price and want to know how much of it is tax.

What are the GST rate slabs in India?

Five standard slabs: 0% (essential food, milk, vegetables, books), 5% (packaged food, footwear under ₹1000, life-saving drugs, basic services), 12% (processed food, mobile phones, business-class flights), 18% (most goods and services — the default for everything not specifically classified), 28% (luxury goods, automobiles, tobacco, aerated beverages — many also attract Compensation Cess on top).

Is this calculator accurate for IGST / CGST / SGST split?

Yes. The total GST amount is the same whether you split it intra-state (CGST + SGST) or inter-state (IGST). For intra-state transactions, the rate divides equally — e.g. 18% = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For inter-state, the full 18% is IGST. This calculator shows the combined GST; the split depends on the buyer and seller's states.

Where can I find the GST rate for my product?

GST rates are tied to HSN codes for goods and SAC codes for services. Use the official rate finder at gst.gov.in or our HSN Lookup tool to find your product's HSN, then look up the corresponding rate. Most goods sit at 18%; check the official notifications when uncertain because rates change at every GST Council meeting (~quarterly).
